If I load a song and then turn on FF800 I have a Kernel Panic 100% of the time.
The obvious workaround is to remember to turn on the interface first, but I also experience random crashes, so I thought it might be easier to track this 100% repeatable bug down first.
I have attached two Crash Reports below.
Please advise if you need anymore information.
Cheers,
Scott

Hi,
If you mean turn on FF when app is already running ?
I personally never do this with any app on Mac or PC
always turn on FF before running OS or after but before any app !
hope it helps
regards S-EH
Offline
It's generally a good idea to turn on the FF before starting the APP, but it should not be necessary. On OS X it's common that you can plugin interfaces after application start and on Windows the RME drivers allow this, too (which is a very special and uncommon feature).

I wholeheartedly agree that it is best practice to turn on the FF before starting an audio app (Logic 9.0.2 in my case), but forgetting to do so should not cause a Kernel Panic, it certainly didn't in the past.
As I said in my original post, my main concern is random crashes when using 10.6.1 /logic 9.0.2 and FF800 Driver 2.6.4 FF800, I am posting the two crash reports because the bug is 100% reproducible.
BTW If Matthias is reading this and interested:
- When I installed 2.6.4a the FF800 was not recognised (it still shows up in system profiler)
- I have since downgraded to driver 2.6.2a and FF800 is recognised and forgetting to turn on the FF800 will not crash my machine.
- I will stick with this configuration until you have a chance to test FF800 with Logic 9.0.2 and Mac OSX 10.6.1.
**Please note I am not blaming RME for this problem I appreciate a lot has changed recently.**
Cheers,
Scott

emdebee,
Thanks for the tip, I installed 2.6.4a twice and FireFace was recognised and plays audio, hopefully we will hear when they have had a chance to test with LP 9.0.2/OSX10.6.1.

Glad it worked!
BTW - what firmware revision are you using with the FF800? Oops - just looked at your sig... v2.70 right? With or without TCO?
Sorry about all of the questions but I am trying to figure out if I should flash my FF800 to v2.70 - no TCO installed...

The new installer reliably deletes all old driver files. BUT, this is a simple installer provided by Apple and it does not give any useful feedback to the user. We are pretty sure that in your cases - as you had 2.64 already installed - the installer decided to not install the new version as you had one with a similar name already on your computer (which the installer just deleted...). In other words: we should have labelled this one 2.65, and you ended up with no driver installed at all (which the installer will NOT tell you!).
So for anyone not having 2.64 it should work flawlessly, the others need to install it two times.
BTW, we are testing with Logic 9 all the time. No crash on our computers so far, but we will check with Logic already running again..

I have already installed 2.64a two times but

Hi,
I had many problems with the last drivers on my setup and, unfortunately, my system still freezes with the new driver v. 2.64a. The bug happens when I start the Mac (if I launch the Audio and Midi setup utility, the current highlighted entry is Internal Output). Then I turn the FF800 on (a new entry is created in the Audio and Midi setup, but the selected entry is still Internal Output). Finally, when I launch iTunes (v. 9.0.1) and try to play a song, the system freezes and I have to restart the computer by holding the power button.
And I can confirm that Logic freezes here, as well, when you start the FF800 with Logic already running.
My current configuration is :
- Mac Pro early 2008 w/ 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Xeon & 6 GB RAM
- OS 10.6.1 w/ 64 bits kernel and extensions
- RME Fireface 800 w/ driver 2.64a & firmware 2.47
- Logic Pro 9.0.2
Any thoughts ?

Please update to firmware 2.70. Did you check that the kext driver file is really the 2.64a?
Apart from that I have to check that the new driver fix had been done for 64 bit kernel mode too. It might be that this first fix is 32 bit tested only.
Offline
Thanks Matthias , the firmware update solved my problem.
Now, if I launch iTunes *before* I turn FF800 on, the whole system freezes just the same...
Then 2.70 firmware didn't help with Logic 9 bug either.
Hope this helps...

Hi Matthias,
i can confirm the above also.
Most of the time, from boot up, I need to power cycle the Fireface 800, as it launches with the wrong ID number under fireface settings, therefore I get the prompts from Logic telling me that the old interface is not available and to use this new one etc etc.
So power cycling results in the whole computer hanging (MacPro 10.6.1, Logic 9.0.2, kernal driver 2.64 driver 2.64, Unit #937C69B7 v2.70, although it has been identified incorrectly for sometime now on a cold boot)
Cheers,
Matt

BTW, those old freezing problems came back after simply suspending the mac activity. Actually, when I wake up the mac and launch the FF800, the launch of the first app that uses audio (iTunes, Logic, etc.) will systematically freeze the system.
I had to reinstall the 2.62a driver yesterday. The first install was unsuccessful though, and I had to delete all the FF driver and apps before a second install. It's working now but I won't send the machine to sleep for now.

Still think it's a SL, kernel extensions, firewire bus related issue.

@paviglianiti : I just booted SL with 32 bit kernel & extensions, then repaired permissions. On first launch I had no sound in iTunes, so I rebooted the machine and on second launch I had a kernel panic. On third launch iTunes just freezed SL like it used to.
Anyway, I've got urgent work to do on Logic now, so I guess it's time for me to cease experiments on SL. I'll stay on 10.6/64 bit kernel for a while, being very careful with my handling, and if it's still too messy I'll grab my 10.5.8 disk image from SuperDuper.
I suppose RME are working hard on those problems, so good luck with them! I'll come back and check later when the work is done. Hopefully not too far away from now...

paviglianiti,
Thanks for the info, hopefully Apple are aware of the issue, and will fix in 10.6.2.
I for one have been submitting my crash reports to Apple.

Just a question on this if you don't mind. I had 2.64 installed before 2.64a and had no problems installing 2.64a other than the fact the kext file is showing the version number 2.64. I installed twice as mentioned above so don't think I have the correct version?
Cheers.

Same here, so when FF doesn't work after 2.64a, do the same, delete the old files.

Two weeks on from the original post and no fixes or progress updates, a little bit disappointing.
With 2.6.4a I have to shutdown the computer, power-up FF800, and then launch Logic 9.0.2 otherwise I have a kernel panic.
I have a simple setup 1x UAD2 card, 2x iLoks and 1x elicenser
Crash report, I started the FF800 before starting logic.

We are constantly working on this and are even in contact with Apple about this issue. As soon as the culprit is found there will be a new driver (surprise surprise).

For me this 2 month old bug is getting worse. Now I have to shutdown the computer, turn on the FF800, and restart the computer, otherwise the computer will freeze.
This bug has caused dozens of crashes over the last 2 months so I assume various files may have become corrupted. Short of reformatting the HD and reinstalling all my software, is there anything (i.e. trashing preferences etc) I can do to improve the stability of FF800?
Offline
Yes, this is troubling. I don't seem to have it as bad as you, but I get a lockup if I don't treat the FF800
just right. This appears to be with anything which touches the FF800: Logic 9.0.2, Cubase 5.0.1, Audio
MIDI Setup. (Mac OS X 10.6.2, FF800 1.47 and 2.6.4a.)

I've been dealing with a similar issue for months; for me, I get a Kernel Panic 100% of the time if my FF800 is powered on before I boot my Mac. If I turn it on after the Mac boots, it's fine. I've had my FF800 for about 5 years and never had an ounce of trouble with it until recently. Once these kernel panics started happening, they got more and more frequent. I too feared corruption so I started with a fresh OS install and upgraded/updated everything (FF drivers, Snow Leopard, Logic 9.0.2) but it still happens. Again, all is well as long as I power up my FF800 after booting, but I never had to do this before - my FF800 was on all the time.
Hope a stable solution is found soon!

Jim I noticed you and I both have 16GB of RAM, Wayne do you also have 16GB? I am wondering if there is something peculiar about our setups?
I would have thought a MacPro 2008 with FF800 would not be that uncommon so I am surprised more people are not talking about this issue?
Maybe I should do a poll on Gearslutz?
On a lighter note this reminds me of the voodoo surrounding external SCSI hard-drive was in the 1990s, using the FF800 for the last couple of months has me walking on egg shells

Hey Scott,
I had this problem before upgrading to 16GB RAM (I had 8 before that). What's really strange to me is that this seems to have started at random for me after years of no trouble whatsoever. I hadn't done any updates of any kind - but once it started happening, it got worse and worse and now it's pretty much a given. Very frustrating, as my RME stuff has always been the most reliable gear I've owned!

Matthias,
I understand when you solve the problem you will release an update (not surprised:-) ).
But after two month of this serious and deteriorating bug an update on progress would be greatly appreciated by your customers.
