Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

There's a lot to read through and I haven't been on the forums in a while. As I read through, I see mixed responses and some never stating if their issues where resolved or not. So, I just wanted to know, is the Fireface good to go with Snow Leopard or should I stay away a little longer?

I ask because I'll have time to install over the weekend, if good to go.

Yay or nay?

Thanks for any help. I'll go continue to read to see if I can find out more myself, also.

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

I installed SL 10.6.1 a few weeks ago and I can tell you it has definitely been too much of a hassle to keep the FF800 working.
Well, if it didn't work for me doesn't mean it won't work for you, though. But you must be warned that you might find yourself downgrading in a few days, so I would stay away from that if I were you.

We don't know when RME will release a full working driver (a driver that would especially deal with 64 bits kernel and extensions). Hopefully not too far away, eh! The last driver update was 10 days ago, maybe they're waiting for the next Snow Leopard update to come before going on with their work…

Good luck with them anyway, I'm yearning to use my Fireface with SL and, to be honest, quite impatient to begin working with SL as well smile

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

Thanks for the info Wolfman. I think I will stay away then, until I hear more positive reports, especially since our setups are so similar (by the info in your signature). Bummer. Maybe it won't be too much longer.

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

Anyone else having trouble with Logic getting caught up while initializing Core Audio. My Fireface 800 and Logic both open up fine on their own. But, when I try to put both on at the same time, the system gets held up Initializing Core Audio. I am running Snow Leopard and believe I have updated the drivers correctly.

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

I am getting ready to purchase a new 27" iMac and had planned on getting the FF800 (or maybe FF400).

1) Do we know if RME is working on a new driver to specifically address the aforementioned issues?
2) Do issues exist with FF400?

Thanks. (p.s. - I am glad I came across this forum - hopefully I will be getting the FF....it's a great sounding unit)

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

Hello, youngmickey.

1. Yes, according to RME they are actively working on these known issues.
2. I cannot speak for FF400 users, as I use the FF800s. I would assume that they are having the same issues since the units are so similar, however.

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

Well I just updated my Fireface 800 to the new driver I think it's 2.64a and OS does not see at all. It does not show up in my Audio Midi set up, it's like it's not there.
Bummer it was working ok, with occasional freezes which I hoped this would fix.
Since I upgraded to SL if you don't turn on FF800 before the mac there is a guaranteed freeze, so I just got into a habit of turning it on first.

Re: Fireface 800 and Snow Leopard.

I was all over the other threads, so just shortly:

- FF800 with the newest driver works with me under SL

BUT

- When I turn on the FF800 *after* the MacPro, every music app freezes to death when initializing the CoreAudio driver.
- Mixer functionality is there, but the mixer has to be restarted once to see input levels.
- Mixer and Settings are NOT loaded automatically anymore.

The only workaround so far:

- Turn on the FF800 and THEN the computer OR restart the computer with the FF800 turned on. Only then, there are no freezes, and only then the Mixer and Settings are loaded automatically.

I was in contact with RME support about this, and they were pleased with my extensive bug report. At that time, they found it hard to reproduce, but they were working on it. I don't know anything else, but it might help to send REAL bug reports (along with the exact sequence of actions you took and a crash report if available) rather than ranting in the forums.

I hope these issues will be resolved soon. At the moment, it's no real pleasure to work with my FF800. Before, it was a no-brainer. Now, I have to think first and act later. wink

Best regards,

Christian
