RME HDSP EXPANSION BOARDS

Overview

RME offers several Expansion Boards, that add more or other I/O ports to the internal cards of the Hammerfall, HDSP, HDSPe and DIGI96 series.

The TEB (TDIF Expansion Board) turns the internal ADAT I/O port, found on many RME cards, into an external TDIF port.

The AI4S-192 AIO and AO4S-192 AIO add additional analog inputs and outputs of true studio quality to the HDSP 9632 and the HDSPe AIO.

The Word Clock Module WCM adds a word clock input and two outputs in professional quality to the HDSP 9632, HDSPe RayDAT and the HDSPe AIO.

Compatibility

HDSP 9632 / HDSPe AIO: One AI4S-192 AIO and one AO4S-192 AIO can be connected simultaneously, for a maximum of 6 analog inputs and outputs. One TEB can be connected to the internal ADAT ports. The WCM adds one word clock input and two outputs. All options can be used at the same time.

HDSP 9652: Up to two TEBs can be used simultaneously.

Hammerfall DSP Multiface / Digiface Multiface and Digiface use the Hammerfall DSP PCI card. This card has no internal inputs or outputs. Therefore no Expansion Boards can be used.

AI4S-192 AIO and AO4S-192 AIO: 4-Channel analog I/O modules with 192 kHz support

HDSP 9652 / AI4S / AI4O

Works with: HDSPe AIO, HDSP 9632

These options for the HDSP 9632 and HDSPe AIO are analog expansion boards, designed as bracket with 4 stereo TRS jacks each. AI4S-192 AIO provides four servo-balanced inputs, AO4S-192 AIO provides four servo-balanced outputs. With this a maximum of 6 (including the stereo I/O of the card) inputs and/or outputs can be achieved.

The converters offer the same performance as the on-board stereo analog I/O of the HDSPe AIO: up to 192 kHz, balanced connection and the choice of three different reference levels, selected in the Settings dialog.

Both modules can be used single or in combination. The display of the channels in TotalMix changes accordingly.

Note: AI4S-192 and AO4S-192 (without the suffix AIO) do work only with the HDSP 9632. The current Expansion Boards with the suffix AIO work with both cards.

TEB: TDIF Expansion Board

HDSP TEB

Works with: HDSPe RayDAT, DIGI9636/52, HDSP 9652, DIGI96 Series

The TEB (TDIF Expansion Board) adds an 8-Channel TDIF interface to all ADAT-capable RME cards. Special features include manual choice of clock reference, status LEDs and a word clock output.

The TEB is designed for maximum flexibility. Used with the Hammerfall series and the HDSP 9652, it can even be used at sample rates of 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz. Meeting the TDIF specification, Double Line mode uses two channels in single speed to get one channel in Double Speed. Therefore at 88.2/96 kHz up to 4 channels are available.

Installation is done in a convenient manner using the supplied bracket. No PCI slot on the motherboard is required. The integrated Clock Select Switch selects the TDIF reference clock, thus avoids any clocking problems even with 'problematic' TDIF devices.

Operation of TEB

Using the Expansion Board is very easy to do, thanks to the clearly structured and informative Settings Dialog of RME's cards. The TEB operates like any other converter with ADAT input and output, but is connected internally. Therefore the input selector has to be set to 'Internal'.

The TEB receives its clock either from the card or the external TDIF device. This is selected via the switch at the bracket.

The Input Status displays the selected input (Internal), the current sample rate (44.1/48) and format (Adat).

The ADAT output of all cards operate in parallel to the TDIF output. When Hammerfall or HDSP 9652 are operated in Double Speed mode, the TEB automatically converts the audio data to 4-Channel Double Line format.

Word Clock Module (WCM)

HDSP 9632 Word Clock Module

Works with: HDSPe RayDAT, HDSPe AIO, HDSP 9632

The Word Clock Module (WCM) provides a galvanically isolated word clock input and two word clock outputs (BNC connectors). Both outputs have their own driver stages, providing an extremely low jitter signal. A push switch activates 75 Ohms termination for the hi-impedance input. SteadyClock, part of the PCI card, guarantees an excellent performance in all clock modes. Its highly efficient jitter suppression refreshes and cleans up any clock signal, and provides it as reference clock at the two outputs.

Installation is done in a convenient manner using the supplied bracket. No PCI slot on the motherboard is required. The module is internally connected via a 10-pin connector and a flat ribbon cable to the PCI card. Thanks to several LEDs (power, termination, LOCK) and the highly integrated concept of installation, first operation and usage are simple even for the inexperienced user.

More information could be found in the HDSP 9632 WCM manual.
